Alex
Harvey is the creator of Dance With Kids. Born in Portland, Oregon
(USA), Alex started her professional career as a child model in
print and television, and worked as a "mannequin model"
in department stores throughout her childhood.
Just
5 years old when she started her dance education, Alex has studied
ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance. As a student at the Jefferson
Performing Arts School from 1982 to 1984, she was a member of
the Jefferson Dancers, led by Mary Folberg, currently head of
Northwest Academy in Portland, Oregon. Between 1982 and 1983 Alex
was member of the cheerleading squad "Dazzle" for the
NBA Portland Trailblazers. Alex has trained with dancers from
the world famous Dance Theater of Harlem, Martha Graham and Alvin
Ailey companies.
As
a fashion merchandising major at Central Washington University
from 1984 to 1988, Alex was a member of the performing dance company
"Orchesis". From 1986 until 1988, she taught jazz dance
and was awarded for her interpretations of Michael and Janet Jackson
in local lip-sync competitions.
In
1990, Alex moved to Torino, Italy, where she taught dance at La
Scuola di Danza Sampaoli, Il laboratorio della danza, CISAC and
Danza Viva 2000. She also taught in Ravenna, Ferrara and Piacenza.
In 1994, Alex performed with the Reebok dance/aerobic group at
the Festival of Fitness in Rimini with Laura Cristina and Max
Masotti and was a member of the dance company "Inside Out",
directed by Garey Palmer. She also created a performing group
called "Stai Zitto e Balla!" (Shut up and Dance!) in
Torino.
In
1994, Alex started working for Foot Locker in Torino, while continuing
teaching dance. In 1996, she moved to The Netherlands with Foot
Locker Europe BV, as a merchandiser. In 2001, she started working
for Tommy Hilfiger Europe BV, and throughout the years, held various
positions within the retail department.
In
2007, Alex started working for a retail graphic design agency,
Storeage BV, in Amsterdam. As a surprise event, Alex organized
a dance workshop for her colleagues. This re-sparked her love
of dancing, and her desire to teach. This is when she decided
to take up teaching again - but this time focus on children.
The
opportunity arose when she offered streetdance at her children's
school as an extra curricular activity. After a few weeks, her
courses were filled with eager children of all ages and backgrounds.
In
November 2014, Alex started "DanceWithKids" to teach kids of
all ages that dance is cool, and a fun way to express themselves
- no matter who they are or where they come from. Hiphop
is an important way to stay positive, be a team player, get great
exercise and develop self-esteem in a creative way. If you are interested in coaching or private lessons to improve your technique or style of dancing, please contact me.
Since 2018, Alex has been working with a charity in Kenya, offering dance classes and workshops at various dance schools and sports clubs. |
